Neutrino Subatomic Particles Don't Travel Faster Than Light--Einstein Was Right, Physicists Say

The final nail in the coffin may have been dealt to the idea that neutrino particles can travel faster than light.

The same lab that first reported the shocking results last September, which could have upended much of modern physics, has now reported that the subatomic particles called neutrinos "respect the cosmic speed limit."

Physicist Sergio Bertolucci, research director at Switzerland's CERN physics lab, presented the results today (June 8) at the 25th International Conference on Neutrino Physics and Astrophysics in Kyoto, Japan.

"Although this result isn't as exciting as some would have liked, it is what we all expected deep down," Bertolucci said in a statement.

The new findings come from four experiments that study streams of neutrinos sent from CERN in Geneva to the INFN Gran Sasso National Laboratory?in Italy. All four, including the experiment behind the first faster-than-light findings, called OPERA, found that this time around, the nearly massless neutrinos traveled quickly, but not that quickly. Last year, OPERA measured that neutrinos were making the 454-mile (730-kilometer) underground trip?between the two labs more speedily than light, arriving there 60 nanoseconds earlier than a beam of light would.

At the time, the physicists were stunned because such a result seemed to break Einstein's prediction that nothing could travel faster than light. This idea is at the heart of his theory of special relativity, on which much of our modern technology and scientific understanding is based.

The OPERA researchers weren't sure what could explain their anomalous results, having checked and rechecked their work, so they released their findings to the larger community of physicists in hopes that experts around the world could help them figure it out.

"The story captured the public imagination, and has given people the opportunity to see the scientific method in action ? an unexpected result was put up for scrutiny, thoroughly investigated and resolved in part thanks to collaboration between normally competing experiments," Bertolucci said. "That's how science moves forward."

Labs around the world, including the other experiments at Gran Sasso ? called Borexino, ICARUS and LVD ? as well as the MINOS experiment in Illinois and the T2K project in Japan, tried to recreate the OPERA findings. None were able to do so: Every time, neutrinos appeared to obey the speed limit of light.

Now, the OPERA scientists think their original measurement can be written off as owing to a faulty element of the experiment?s fiber-optic timing system.

Open-mesh PC case keeps heat, dust bunnies at bay

If you haven't done it in a while, opening your PC case can be like a slasher flick -- you know you'll see something disgusting, but you're never sure what. Taiwan's YoungYear Electronics claims to stop the horror with its Green Mesh case, which has neither fans to suck dust, nor filters, and keeps your components cool with a "chimney effect" instead. It's this same action that repels dust out the top, so that only one quarter the usual amount of filth is drawn in -- according to the company. The only downside is that with poor heat dissipation, the maximum power supply unit size is 300 watts -- which probably scratches it off the list for most modders or power-users. For the rest, if you don't mind your computer's innards blowing in the breeze, at least you'd have no nasty case-opening frights.

Apple?s loose ends: How iOS 6 must make amends at WWDC

Next week is a big week in the mobile space. Google will kick off its annual I/O developer conference, but not before Apple?s had its chance to wow the world with a show of its own: WWDC.

WWDC 2012 kicks off on Monday, with most believing that Apple will take the chance to show iOS 6 off to its developer collective. We?ve already been through what we want Apple to unveil, but there are a few extra loose ends, that have either been promised or hinted at, that Apple really needs to address. These are as follows?

Siri SDK

Siri says some odd things sometimes. Ask it to take down a note, for instance, and it won?t tell you that it can?t; it?ll tell you that it can?t ?yet?.?Same goes for making contacts, taking photos an downloading apps.

Without doubt, Apple?s going to expand on Siri?-?what?s left up in the air is when?and to what extent?Apple?s going to let Siri into the hands of developers. Having apps that can be controlled by voice will, in some cases, be a real revolution.

iOS widget SDK

Apple?s never laid out plans to include widgets in the SDK, but hacks have proven that it?s possible to put non-Apple messages in the Notification Centre. In May last year, hackers managed to infiltrate the drop-down menu and replace a widget with the simple message ?Hello World?.

It was a proof of possibility exercise, rather than an attempt to build anything useful, but it says there?s more possibility there than initially meets the eye ? all Apple needs to do is include that extended functionality in the iOS SDK. That way, devs will be able to make proper Notification Centre widgets, similar to those in Android.

Siri location services in the UK

We?ve been over this before, but Apple simply has to unleash Siri?s location-based services in the UK and elsewhere. Currently it?s tied in with Yelp! in the US, but Tim Cook?s recent musings that Apple is ?doubling-down? on Siri suggest that the company?s going to have something new to announce at WWDC.

It needs to: Apple?s Siri FAQ says that ?Maps and local search support will be available in additional countries in 2012.? Perhaps this?ll tie in with Apple?s new proprietary maps service?

Facebook integration

Twitter made the cut in iOS 5, bringing the option to tweet pictures and messages from anywhere in the OS. This came as a result of a close relationship between the micro-blogging site and Apple during a time that the latter?s relationship with Facebook was very strained.

That?s not the case now. Tim Cook?s been full of praise for Facebook recently, and at the D10 conference last month he teased us with this:

?Anyone that has an iPhone or iPad, we want them to have the best experience with Facebook on those platforms. So stay tuned.?

Facebook not being involved while Twitter is smacks of half a job to us. iOS 6 has to get this fixed.

Do Not Disturb

Of all the new features that have filtered into the Developer Preview of Mac OS X Mountain Lion, the most intriguing is Do Not Disturb. Most of Mountain Lion?s tweaks are things borrowed from iOS, but DND is an evolution that needs to make it?s way back.

Head to the Notification Centre on a Mountain Lion-enabled Mac, and you?ll be able to turn on the Do Not Disturb mode, which halts all notifications and alerts, for if you?re watching a movie or playing a game.

If iOS 6 doesn?t have that feature, we?ll eat our collective hats.

Offline Reading List

Similarly, the version of Safari in OS X now has a place to store all the pages you?ve added to your Reading List. On iOS, you can transform the page you?re on into a Reader page, with the text and images stripped back to their most basic form, but there?s no way to save these anywhere to access later and offline.

It?s not too much of a stretch to think that Apple will bring this across in iOS 6, but it?s an interesting one, because it would arguably suck a lot of business away from apps like Pocket.

Americans have a weight problem, with more than a third of us estimated to fall into the obese category.?It's a problem automakers are struggling with as well.?Over the last several decades, the typical automobile has added hundreds of pounds, according to industry data, as it has grown longer and added more comfort, safety and convenience features.

Engineers are now struggling with how to cut all that added car flab. There are a variety of reasons why, but the biggest factor is fuel economy.?The industry?s general rule of thumb is that 100 pounds equals a mile a gallon.? And with automakers facing tough new fuel economy standards in 2016 and even more stringent mandates for 2025, it?s becoming critical to end the auto obesity epidemic.

The new Cadillac XTS underwent the automotive equivalent of liposuction.?Though a full foot longer than the compact Caddy CTS, the 2013 Caddy sedan weighs about 100 pounds less, thanks to some creative engineering ? including the use of new, ultra-high-strength steel alloys.

Porsche was able to slash nearly as much weight off the new, seventh-generation 911 sports car through similarly creative engineering and the introduction of aluminum and even carbon fiber.?The maker?s 2013 Boxster is expected to see similar mass reductions.

And though it?s slightly larger than the old model, the new Nissan Altima is 79 pounds lighter than the outgoing sedan. The process wasn?t easy, company engineers stress, and required an intensive focus on literally every element of the new Altima?s design, down to the re-engineered continuously-variable transmission.?The new model also switched to lighter aluminum for its trunk, roof and hood.

Nissan will achieve a significant payoff -- the base 2013 Altima rated at 38 miles per gallon on the highway -- of as much as several mpg better than the so-called Eco versions of competitors such as the Chevrolet Cruze and Ford Fusion. And without the added price premium.

?Cutting mass was a major factor in getting there,? ?along with improved aerodynamics and?powertrain?refinements, said John Curl, Nissan North America?s senior product planner for the Altima project.

It?s hard to find a manufacturer that isn?t putting a premium on cutting weight. Before retiring earlier this year, Ford product chief Derrick Kuzak laid out a goal of trimming as much as 750 pounds off the weight of the No. 2 Detroit maker?s typical product.

But the process, which industry insiders have dubbed ?lightweighting,? isn?t as simple as it might seem -- especially in the U.S., where people equate size with luxury.?

The rule of the automotive business is that with every new model-year, ?consumers expect more features and more and more safety equipment,? said General Motors designer Bob Boniface. Even that little CD changer built into the dash adds five pounds of mass, Boniface said.

Federal regulations further complicate the situation.?Take the new roof crush safety standard that went into effect last year, effectively requiring manufacturers to more than double the ability of a vehicle to survive a rollover.

?You?ve got tough new safety standards that add weight at same time you have stringent new mileage standards,? complains analyst Jim Hall, of Detroit-based 2953 Analytics.? ?At some point, somebody?s going to have to blink.?

Perhaps, but Boniface and other industry leaders don?t expect to see regulators back off anytime soon. Instead, the pressure is on for the industry to come up with alternative solutions, whether through creative engineering or the use of breakthrough materials, such as carbon fiber.?

The super-strong, ultra-light material has long been used in race cars and exotic automobile, such as the $1 million McLaren F1 supercar of a decade back. But it is a major challenge to produce, requiring extensive labor that has priced it out of use by all but the most expensive automobiles.? But that may soon change.

The original McLaren F1 used a carbon fiber ?tub? that took 3,000 man hours to produce.?On the next-generation Mercedes-McLaren SLR it still took 400. With McLaren?s newest street car, the MP4-12C, ?believe it or not, we got it down to four hours on this car,? boasts chief designer Frank Stephenson.

That model is still beyond the reach of the typical motorist, at nearly $300,000.?But carbon fiber will account for 44 percent?of the material used in Chrysler?s reborn Viper sports car, at a quarter the price. And BMW believes it could soon bring the cost of the material down enough to use in models like the $40,000 3-Series. It will make extensive use of carbon fiber in its new BMW i3 and i8 battery cars because the lower weight will allow greater range.

The good news is that even the newest steel alloys are getting both stronger and lighter, helping to meet new safety mandates while also reducing mass.

But analyst Hall is skeptical makers can pull several 100 pounds off the typical car, never mind 750, because of both federal rules and consumer demand.? ?The best makers will be able to do,? he contends, ?is manage the bloat.

Designers like McLaren?s Stephenson and GM?s Boniface are more upbeat, though they admit it?s a challenge to deal with automotive obesity, much like it is for the mere mortal motorists who will have to squeeze inside their new automobiles.

Logitech Alert 750n Indoor Master System

Logitech's latest set of home-surveillance cameras build admirably on the existing Alert 750e Outdoor Master System??($349.99, 4 stars). The major difference is that the new Alert 750n Indoor Master System ($299.99 list) is, if you can't guess, for indoor use. The camera lacks weather-proofing, but costs $50 less. Plus, the indoor and outdoor systems are entirely compatible on the software end, so you can mix and match them, with up to six cameras on one network. ?Overall, the system offers an easy way to see what's going on at home when you're not there, even in the dark of night, and is our new Editors' Choice for surveillance cameras.

Design and Software
Thanks to the included mounting accessory hardware, which even includes a suction cup option, you can put the cameras just about anywhere, from wall to ceiling. However, Alert cameras use HomePlug to access your home network, so a nearby open AC outlet is required. And you can't plug into a power strip or a UPS?they prevent network signals from reaching your interior wiring and using the power lines like Ethernet cables.

Note: You also need to connect your router to the power lines, for the camera to be seen by computers as well as for any Internet functions (like watching live video on a mobile phone). So make sure your home router also has a spare outlet nearby.

The Alert camera is somewhat bulky, measuring 2.8 by 4.4 by 1.8 inches (HWD). If you don't mount it or suction it to a window, it sits in a cradle that doesn't allow position adjustment?there's no tilt, for example. But the wide-angle lens easily encompasses an entire room's width, so this isn't a huge problem. The HomePlug adapter for each camera is almost the same size. Both sport an array of LEDs to provide insight on network traffic. (You can turn them off for added stealth.)

In a nice touch, each Alert camera has a microSD card inside which stores up to 2GB of video. According to Logitech, that's enough for one week of recordings in a typical home. The company also claims a free Dropbox?account, with 2GB of free online storage, could also hold a week's worth of data from one camera. If you go over the 2GB on the camera, you can use your PC's hard drive for additional storage. You can specify in the Alert Commander software how much disk space to use.

All of this is in contrast to the Wi-Fi-based Dropcam HD?($149 direct, 4 stars), which stores all video data in the cloud. The only free option for cloud storage with Logitech Alert is to follow Logitech's directions to backup video to DropBox.

You could pay for the Logitech Alert cameras and that's it?local DVR recordings cost you nothing. ?If you're mobile, using an Android, iOS, or BlackBerry device, real-time viewing is always free with an app download, but that's it. However, you can subscribe to the optional Logitech Web and Mobile Commander service for $80 a year to watch recorded video on your phone or a remote PC. You can also manage the entire system this way, or even share clips and control multiple sites that have the Alert software installed.?

Features and Performance
The heart of the system is the Logitech Alert Commander software, which runs on a Windows system on your network. There's no Mac version. You can control up to six Alert cameras at a time. (Additional interior cameras, Alert 700n models, identical to the 750n ?but sans the dongle for your router are $229.99 each.)The video you record from each camera is stored locally on the camera or your hard drive. Playback is very good, with no buffering problems. However, it's only 960-by-720-pixel video running at 15 frames per second?not exactly full motion, but sufficient nonetheless.

Email alerts can be sent by the software whenever motion is detected. Luckily, you can throttle down both the sensitivity and the timing, so you're not inundated with messages. You can also set up zones of view to monitor for motion, so you don't get an alert just because a ceiling fan is spinning. In this case, only motion video is captured, which saves on disk space. You can also sit and watch the real-time video feed, or use Playback mode to skip through to the captured sections whenever motion was detected. Fortunately, you can fast forward at up to 8x speed if there's a lot to see. In comparison, the Dropcam HD features great motion capture, but doesn't have a fast forward for playback; the Avaak VueZone System?($199.95, 4 stars) actually makes you pay a bit extra for cameras that have motion detection capability.

The 750n camera, like the outdoor-focused 750e ?and competitor Dropcam HD, sees very well in the dark. Even in what humans would think is pure inky blackness, the lens can witness plenty. There's a microphone on the camera so you can listen to what you see, but no speaker, so there's no talking back to whoever you're spying on. That is a feature unique to the Dropcam HD.

I tested with an AT&T iPhone 4 and the app worked flawlessly. I saw a nice 640-by-480-pixel video that is essentially streaming from the camera to the router and out to the Internet. That said, the video was subject to a lot of buffering delay when the handset wasn't on Wi-Fi.

Unlike with Dropcam's mobile app, you can't watch stored video on the phone. That's for the Windows PC on the network only, unless you upgrade to the Alert Web and Mobile Commander service mentioned earlier; then you can watch recorded video anywhere.

Conclusions
The Alert system's cameras are bigger than the Dropcam HD's little puck, but both require a holder, so the size issue may be moot for all but the most stealthy of installations. And the use of HomePlug rather than Wi-Fi makes camera placement less flexible, but the Logitech Alert cameras use the power lines incredibly well and feature a quick, slick setup procedure.?Adding Wi-Fi to a future generation of Alert cameras will only make the line better.?Logitech addresses cloud storage with the Dropbox solution, but that could cost you if you're not careful. That's still less expensive than the optional $80 Web and Mobile Commander service, but not as versatile. The truly security conscious should make the upgrade.?All of that said, the Logitech 750n Indoor Master System and 700n add-on cameras are worthy siblings to the 750e Outdoor system, and share our Editors' Choice award designation.

Spurs' Ginobili back in starting lineup for Game 5

SAN ANTONIO (AP) ? Spurs guard Manu Ginobili is back in the starting lineup for Game 5 against the Oklahoma City Thunder on Monday night.

Ginobili replaces Danny Green, who is shooting just 8 of 28 in the Western Conference finals. It's the first start for Ginobili since March 23 and just his eighth all season.

Spurs coach Gregg Popovich wouldn't discuss any lineup changes before the game. But the move is a big shake-up for the Spurs after they dropped Games 3 and 4 in Oklahoma City following a 20-game winning streak.

Ginobili is averaging 13.1 points in the playoffs.

Online gaming broadcast network TwitchTV is announcing a scholarship for college students who study and play hard.

One-year-old video streaming network TwitchTV is giving away $50,000 to support five young gamers. Gamers will need at least a 3.0 GPA ? plus demonstrated skill in any game ? to win a $10,000 scholarship.

TwitchTV is the largest gaming broadcast network in the world. This initiative is a way for the company to pay back the huge, young gaming community behind its success. It?s up to 17 million unique visitors a month since its June 2011 launch.

The scholarship will give students a chance to ?take passion and make it a profession,? said Matthew DiPietro, TwitchTV?s vice president of marketing. ?We are giving a people an opportunity to make a living off of their video game streaming activity.?
