Abstract URL:http://www.it-paper.com/the-research-of-multimedia-courseware-to-the-promotion-of-the-vocational-school-on-computer-skills-training-5.html

Since the beginning of the implementation of multimedia courseware,it develops rapidly and it will soon at classroom. At the same time, it optimizes the education in the classroom. However, nowadays, there are some problems on computer skills training classes of vocational education. First, there are too much intensive skills training but neglect the implementation of knowledge correlative to skills. Second, we lack places for skills training. Third, we lack layered skills training. When we encounter these problems, the purpose of our research is to know how we can make multimedia courseware promote computer skills training effectively. The research is based on multimedia courseware, emotional psychology and constructivism theoretically. It is carried out by many methods: reference method, action study, experimentation, comparison and investigation. We propose the principle of learner-centered in designing and using multimedia courseware. Follow seven principles of multimedia teaching which are motioned in the book,?Multimedia Learning?, and they are based on our research. These principles are: multimedia cognition, near in space and time, uniformity, channel, redundancy and individual differences.According to practical research, we can come to a conclusion that multimedia courseware of promoting computer skills training must possess some characteristics below.1. It has a situation for skills training and can create a rich, relaxing atmosphere of learning.2. Our multimedia courseware should have strong interactivity and evaluation.3. It should have strong guidance in skills and make learning and training synchronous.4. Multimedia courseware should be controlled by students but not control the students. They can choose it freely.

JOBS ACT Helps Solar Investing Goes Mainstream ~ what IS working

JOBS ACT Helps Solar Investing Goes Mainstream

Posted by Linda H on 6:38 AM

'; div.innerHTML = summary; } //]]> Thousands of Americans log in to online trading accounts every day to manage personal stock portfolios. Now, there?s a new option for individual investors. I recently took advantage of this option by creating an account with?Solar Mosaic?and investing a small amount of money, along with about 85 other individuals, in a 26-kilowatt rooftop solar system in Oakland.

Right now my $25 investment is really an interest-free loan, since historically companies like Solar Mosaic haven?t been able to offer financial returns on
their products. However, thanks to passage of?the JOBS Act?last month, Solar Mosaic and similar companies will be able to offer returns on investments for ?crowdfunded? projects. So in addition to buying pure stock in a publicly traded company, I?ll soon be able to use websites like Solar Mosaic?s to build a portfolio of solar investments that provide a return on investment with every kilowatt-hour of solar energy produced.

Much has been written about the JOBS Act and its impending effect on?crowdfunding,?entrepreneurs seeking capital, and emerging growth companies like?Kickstarter. But for me, crowdfunding?s new legal status and ability to raise capital for renewable energy projects is indicative of a broader theme: retail investors?that?s you and me, as opposed to institutional investors like banks and funds?now have access to, by my count,?five?primary, different ways to make real money by personally investing in solar.

Let?s look at these five kinds of solar-focused investments that we can currently make as retail investors (if I?ve left any big categories off, please start a discussion in the comment section below!):

1. Crowdfunded Solar

  • As outlined above, companies like Solar Mosaic will soon be able to offer modest returns on stable, low-risk investments in solar PV systems across the U.S. This is as simple as selecting a project, investing $25, and having cash payments flow into your account with interest over time.
  • Crowdfunding isn?t just restricted to solar. In the UK, several companies are encouraging crowdfunded investment incommunity wind projects.

2. Direct Ownership
  • In some states and local jurisdictions, a combination of plummeting solar photovoltaic costs, local and federal incentives, and escalating utility electricity rates have made flat-out ownership of a solar system a good investment with returns as high as 5 percent, depending on location.

3. Third-Party Finance
  • In many places in the U.S., power purchase agreements and solar lease providers like SolarCity, SunRun, and Sungevity can offer zero- down solar leases that save you 15 percent from your old electricity bill from day one.?
  • While more of an immediate payback contract than an ?investment,? the lease option opens up your bank account to put saved money to work elsewhere. Since retail electricity rates historically increase every year, financial returns can expand over the term of the lease.

4. Community Solar Gardens
  • Hailing from RMI?s backyard in Colorado,?Clean Energy Collective?offers customers a way to invest in renewable generation to for up to 100 percent of their electricity use. This investment in solar energy and other renewables can provide a return on investment and is open to individuals without rooftop space of their own.

5. Direct Stock Purchase
  • Perhaps the most obvious way for individuals to invest in solar, anyone can buy stock in publicly traded upstream solar companies like the NASDAQ-listed SunPower (SPWR), First Solar (FSLR), and Enphase (ENPH).
  • Where one invests in the solar value chain can make a big difference on the success of the investment. Stock purchases of downstream participants (like installers and developers) whose value is aligned with the project-focused investing listed in the four cases above, may soon be an option as companies like?SolarCity go public. One can already invest in developer SunEdison through its parent company MEMC (NYSE: WFR) as well as utilities and other larger companies that develop solar. But in these cases the investment will rest on all of the activities of the company, including those not solar-related.
  • Additionally, several mutual funds and business development companies channel capital to solar projects and companies, but I?m not currently aware of any with a singular solar focus?although this could change in the future.

Nest expands its reach, begins shipping Learning Thermostat to Canada

The Nest Learning Thermostat has certainly generated plenty of buzz -- and not just by thermostat standards -- but it's so far only be available to those in the United States. That's finally starting to change today, though, with Nest announcing that is has now begun shipping the thermostat to Canada. Those interested will initially only be order the device through Nest's own website, where it will set Canadians back the same $249 -- they can also take advantage of the "Nest Concierge" program to get the unit professionally installed for $119, with additional installations running $25 each (all still in US dollars). Still no word on any Canadian retailers that will be carrying the device.

Deleted Scenes: Alien hunter redirects her search to Earth-based funding

SETI scientist Jill Tarter retires from research to focus on raising funds to continue search for extraterrestrial life

Web edition : 5:59 pm

Imagine if E.T. phoned Earth and heard, ?We?re sorry, no one is here to take your call right now. Please try again later.? Or if, after traveling for thousands of years, radio signals carrying the imprint of an alien technological civilization fell on dormant Earthly ears.

These possibilities could become reality if funding forces the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence to turn off the telescopes and quit searching for the answer to one of humankind?s most profound questions.

Jill Tarter isn?t going to let that happen.

After 35 years of eavesdropping on the stars, hoping to hear the intelligent murmurings of an extraterrestrial civilization, the SETI Institute?s lead alien hunter is hanging up her receiver and retiring as director of the Center for SETI Research.

But she?s not quitting the quest.

Instead of querying the heavens for signs of life, Tarter will query life on Earth for the funds needed to keep Earth?s ears online. ?We?re just going to make this a crusade,? she told me during an interview. (You can read it here.)

Physicist Gerry Harp has taken the reins from Tarter, the SETI Institute announced on May 22. ?It?s been challenging and exciting, a lot of new things to learn, a lot of new meetings to go to,? Harp says of his new role. ?But from what I?m seeing, Jill?s working at least as hard as she ever did before. I think we should acknowledge that she is still very much a part of the program.?

Tarter?s curiosity about life on other worlds erupted in the 1970s, fueled by a serendipitous merging of her ability to program a very old computer (a PDP-8/S ? ?I always thought the ?S? stood for ?stupid,?? she says), with a forward-looking proposal to find out whether other communicating civilizations exist in the galaxy. At the time, Tarter was in graduate school at the University of California, Berkeley. ?I couldn?t imagine anything more exciting or rewarding than trying to answer this old question,? Tarter says. ?I got hooked and I stayed hooked.?

In 1984, Tarter and several colleagues founded the SETI Institute, a nonprofit organization that has since grown to include more than a hundred people. Once focused mainly on detecting radio signals from extraterrestrial civilizations, the institute now employs scientists studying many factors important for the existence of alien life ? from Kepler team members who are detecting and characterizing exoplanetary systems, to astrobiologists searching for life in the most extreme environments on Earth and in the solar system?s exotic nooks and crannies.

But the institute needs money to keep searching. Once funded by a fraction of a percentage of NASA?s budget, SETI has relied on private donors to maintain the interstellar dial tone since 1993 ? courtesy of one senator, who killed any substantial SETI funding for the foreseeable future. ?For years, we became the four-letter S-word that you couldn?t actually say at NASA headquarters,? Tarter recalls.

Now, with the Allen Telescope Array ? a SETI array comprising 42 dishes (out of a planned 350) ? that funding is more crucial than ever. Last April, the array went into hibernation after funds dried up. In October, the array returned to operations, propelled by individual donors who contributed more than $200,000. Now, the telescope is under new management by SRI International, and is supported by a contract from the U.S. Air Force that tasks it with searching for orbiting space trash.

Still, 50 percent of the observing time is occupied with SETI searches. ?For SETI, it is the best thing around,? Harp says. ?We have 12 hours a day on this telescope. It?s very difficult to get 12 hours a day on any telescope in the world, and that?s what we have.?

Tarter is hoping to once again tap the enthusiasm of SETI supporters and build a lifeline that will support the search for centuries. ?SETI really is the investment in our future,? she said. ?If we detect a signal, we know we can have a long lifetime.? There will be proof that it is possible to become an old technology. Someone else did it. Therefore, damn it, we can do it.?

See the whole Q&A here.

Tiny autonomous sensors could lay hidden for years

1 hr.

Defense research companies are working hard at improving their "unattended ground sensor" technology: tiny, camouflaged devices that can be left alone for months or years to listen for and report events like footsteps and vehicles. The military has been using them for years, but previous versions didn't last nearly as long enough, and weren't effective enough, to justify their cost. The latest models improve on every aspect.

When troops clear an area and move on, they still have to monitor that area for enemy presence. Usually this means sending a patrol -- possibly a single jeep or a few soldiers on foot. These patrols are vulnerable to attack and can't cover every bit of ground. But if troops could drop sensors behind them that would report back every footfall and engine noise, they would know whether they needed to risk sending men out, and get some idea of the location of the threat.

The idea goes back as far as Vietnam, when bulky acoustic sensors were dropped to report back on Viet Cong movements,?but it's only in recent years that the devices have become a contender for mass deployment. Wired has an extended look at the technology with comment from some military and research officials.

The usual advances have contributed to the new models: smaller and faster microchips for detecting and interpreting signals, better batteries and solar cells for keeping those batteries charged, and more intelligent wireless capabilities that let dozens of the sensors share information with each other or their users.

One from Lockheed Martin, pictured, looks just like a rock and can stay active for years -- possibly decades, according to their creator. It listens for footsteps and vehicle noises (the devices can even determine the number of cylinders by certain distinctive measures), puts nearby sensors on alert, and relays the information to the commander.?Another, made by the far smaller Camgian Microsystems, uses a sort of micro-radar to actually watch for movement.

With such a long lifespan, such devices could remain in areas like Afghanistan long after American troops have been withdrawn, providing a basic level of intelligence on movement in areas of interest. Of course, one of?these smart rocks could also be sitting outside a local building or house and no one would be the wiser. In a few years it might be prudent?to check nearby suspicious rocks before whispering?sensitive information.

Digital danger: Is our online activity damaging us?

Jacob Aron, technology reporter

C8K4N9.jpg(Image: Nick Sinclair/Alamy)

SMARTPHONES, social networking and the internet are destroying our identities, ruining friendships and driving us all insane. At least, that is whatiDisorder by Larry Rosen and Digital Vertigo by Andrew Keen would have you believe. I'm not so sure.

Rosen, a psychologist at California State University in Dominguez Hills, argues that over-reliance on technology can cause psychological problems, the "iDisorders" of the book's title, but I struggled to find any causal link in chapter after chapter of correlations.

He describes how social networking "over-sharers" show signs of narcissism, constant phone-fiddlers might have OCD and general exposure to technology can cause ADHD. But of course, the disorders existed before these technologies, and Rosen fails to convince that their incidence is on the rise.

Digital Vertigo is equally unconvincing. Keen, whose previous book, The Cult of the Amateur, railed against user-generated content, states that privacy "is being dumped into the dustbin of history", warning that we cannot trust the likes of Facebook, Apple and Google with our precious personal data. It is a viewpoint I am entirely sympathetic with, but Keen's argument, woven between name-dropping anecdotes from Silicon Valley conferences, a potted history of privacy gaffs in 2011 and a liberal sprinkling of oft-repeated quotes from The Social Network, left me siding with the tech giants.

As Keen points out, we must all take personal responsibility for the information we put online. However, social media need not inevitably lead to Truman Show-style dystopia, as he suggests. I have found Twitter, Facebook and other online services essential for initiating and maintaining major social connections. In fact, without social networking, I would be short one wife, one job and at least half a dozen close friends.

These technologies are tools, and like all tools they must be used correctly. Cars are far more dangerous to society than Facebook; according to the World Health Organization, 1.2 million people die in road traffic accidents each year. We as a society accept this because of the benefits that cars offer, and we work to mitigate the downsides. It should be the same with smartphones and social networking. If you can't go five minutes without a status update then, yes, you should probably step away from the touchscreen, but let's not ignore the great opportunities these technologies offer for fear of some unproven and unrealised disaster.

People used to worry about the effects of the telephone on society, but 150 years on, we seem to be managing just fine.

Rick Snyder Recall Effort Looks For Boost From Recall Vote Against Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker

The approval ratings for Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder are trending upward, but that positive political sign hasn't stopped the Republican's opponents from ramping up their most recent effort to get him recalled.

Michigan Rising, the super PAC organizing the Recall Snyder campaign, said Tuesday members have distributed more than 50,000 petitions in 57 of Michigan's 83 counties. The group has also set up eight permanent signing locations around the state in Traverse City, Frankfort, Detroit, Grand Rapids, Mt. Pleasant, Allegan County, Ypsilanti, St. Clair and Macomb County.

Michigan Rising hopes to get a boost from the upcoming recall vote against Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker, also a Republican.

"A lot is riding on the recall elections in Wisconsin on June 5," Michigan Rising Communications Director Bruce Fealk said in a release. "If Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker and Lt. Governor Rebecca Kleefisch are successfully recalled, it will give the Michigan effort a [shot] in the arm."

Snyder's opponents cite his education, tax and local government policies as reasons to remove him from office. The recall petition also criticizes the emergency manager law and the governor's push to cut the state's business tax.

A similar recall effort against Snyder in 2011 by the group Michigan Citizens United failed to gather the roughly 800,000 signatures needed to oust him -- collecting only about 500,000. Michigan Rising hopes the new petition's language will prove more successful.

Although Snyder has struggled with low approval ratings since taking office in 2011, his popularity across the state now seems to be on the rise. But it remains far from universal.

A recent Epic-MRA poll found that 41 percent of Michigan voters approved and 53 disapproved of the governor's performance. The 600 person statewide poll was conducted from March 31 to April 3 of this year and had a margin of error of 4 percent. The findings are up from Snyder's 37 percent positive and 59 percent negative ratings last November.

If the recall petition is successful, voters will face the question on the November ballot. If they decided to remove Snyder, Lt. Gov. Brian Calley would take over until a successor could be chosen following a special election that would be held in February of 2013.

Soul healing is an alternative hands-on healing method, and although soul healing has proved to be effective treating physical, mental, and spiritual conditions, the method would be considered alternative or complementary by Western health care professionals.

By engaging with spirit, energy fields, and systems natural to each person and the Universe, Simon Hay is connecting to the subtle-energy fields or spiritual bodies of the client, not the physical body which is the domain of the medical field and other allied health care professionals.

Simon Hay is not a medical doctor or other licensed health care professional. Soul healing is not a substitute for medical or psychological treatment from licensed and registered healthcare professionals. Simon Hay advises you seek professional advice before making any health decision.

I highlighted the important bits. In all my consultations, speaking events and writings, I always disclose that I have no medical training or accreditation in any modality of healing. This, from the About page on my website: I'm not like other healers. I cannot show you a certificate or a diploma, and the only letters after my name are the ones I share with my father. Although I have absolute faith in what I do, I'm transparent and honest about my work, and I need to be. Not for the obvious reasons of liability, but out of respect for the people who place trust in me. I have been unsuccessful many times, clients have had no discernible healing response or health change.

Tonight, a close friend told me about an incident that happened at a mind body spirit expo today. A fourteen year old girl went to have a 'free' massage with an (?) alternative healer ? let's call him altered-ego. The girl returned distressed and relayed to my friend that during the massage, altered-ego had diagnosed her to have had an assortment of health issues. I'm presuming altered-ego considers himself a medical intuitive.

After the 'free' massage and during the consult, altered-ego told the girl he could heal her if she booked a session with him, and if she couldn't commit to a treatment she could buy his book and learn to heal herself.

My friend calmed the teen down and talked to her mother. The mother challenged altered-ego, who at first denied any diagnosis', and then admitted he had diagnosed a few minor health issues. His qualification to do so, nil, nada, zip! Oh, he had accreditation in, I'd rather not say healing, or as I prefer to call it, I attended an over-priced weekend workshop and received a sheet of shiny toilet paper with my name on it.

That may annoy some practitioners of energy healing, but let's be honest. Completing a workshop and receiving a certificate of accreditation doesn't guarantee proficiency or results. It's a certificate of attendance, and that's all. I've met and continue to meet people who can heal and get results without any prior experience in or connection to energy healing. All I have to do is encourage them to try. These meetings and my own personal journey have left me sceptical of the validity of certification.

I hear these stories too often and they make it difficult for genuine healers to be taken seriously. Put aside that altered-ego's an idiot, he touched a fourteen year old without parental consent. If my clients aren't eighteen and a parent's not present I won't heal them. I ask parents to sit in on the session. Even when I do distant healing's, I ask for a parent to be in the room with the minor and parents are advised to read all the information on my website beforehand.

Being a medical intuitive, and I'm assuming that's what altered-ego thinks he is, is an abstract science/function (?). The information is influenced by human consciousness and I'm certain no two intuitive's would work the same. A good ? and I don't know how to measure that ? medical intuitive working in conjunction with a doctor or surgeon would make a formidable team.

I see, similar to dreaming, anatomical and cellular images, as a hologram projection, when I'm healing, but I don't always know what I'm seeing or why. At times 'I'm' the fluids in the body. I sense and I am 'something' (?). I don't know how this is possible and I don't how I'm able to get the results that I do. Intention and faith seem important, but so can be bored detachment and, ?fark, I'll give this a try ;).?

As I have no medical training I'd rather be described as an intuitive than a medical intuitive. I'm aware that some client's consider me to be one and I have used the #medical and #intuitive hash-tag on twitter. It's complicated to fit into any one box.

If you're looking for an alternative healer, do some research. Most of my clients are via referrals, and this really is the best endorsement. I know that there are good healers who aren't as vocal or as visible as I am, but check to see if websites are professional and free of advertising. My site is informative and I keep the marketing to a minimum. Want to know how or what I do? Read all the information on my website and every article on my blog. I guess it's not an absolute, but good healers will be transparent and share everything they know.

If you've had a similar experience, please share. No names though. Contact me if you want to vent, that way we can keep our online-consciousness respectful. Talk soon :).

How To Have The Perfect Wedding Day

Wedding planning, when not handled correctly, can drain all the joy out of the days preceding your ceremony. Here are a variety of tips that are designed to get you what you need for your wedding.

If you have the time for it, do something fun and relaxing just for yourself on your wedding morning A great massage would be one way to make sure you feel your best on your wedding day.

As you seek out a dress, don't just think about the kind of dress you'd like to wear, also consider what sorts of dresses will flatter your body. If you are not very tall, steer clear of getting your dress altered, just go to the petite section. You will notice the difference and your guests will too!

Don't be fearful about letting other people help out with segments of planning your wedding. Your wedding is a major life event, so it's natural to want to be part of the entire process to make sure it goes right. However, there may be a point when you are in over your head, and in such cases, it is important to recognize that it might be better to trust a more qualified professional to do the job properly.

Rent diamonds on your wedding day. These can help you look amazing on a budget. You will be able to choose between many different kinds of jewelery while sticking to your budget.

Big centerpieces are overpriced and overrated, often taking more from table conversation than they add to it. As an alternative, try selecting a simple but elegant centerpiece that isn't too large or overwhelming. You will then allow people to have a conversation without unnecessary distractions; this will bring your guests closer.

If you have ample time but a small budget, save some money by printing your wedding invitations yourself. You can purchase invitation kits for a small cost, much cheaper than ordering invitations, and they let you personalize everything on your cards from the color to the font and wording.

See if you can find a willing helper who can assist you with looking after your equipment and moving it when necessary. Your assistant can also be useful when it comes to group shots and rounding up all the required family members.

If you want your colorful wedding cake as the focal point of your reception, present it on a coordinating fabric tablecloth. Whether you choose patterns or solids, the fabric should add another dimension of visual interest and help to tie your wedding cake in with your wedding theme.

It is a good idea to hear the speeches of those who will be speaking at your wedding so you know that their comments will be appropriate. Many generations and people of differing viewpoints will attend your wedding, so your speech makers need to make their speeches geared to everyone and not just play to their own friends.

Take the time to carefully consider the most important aspect of the wedding, your future spouse. Absolutely do not make this life-changing decision in haste. Weigh everything you know about your loved one, and think about everything involved with living with this person forever.

Start a savings account that is intended just for your wedding expenses. Establishing a budget on paper and delegating how much to spend in each area will help you stick to the budget. If you're not ready to get married, start saving now, so you can use the money later.

A professional wedding consultant can make the planning of your wedding go more smoothly, as well as providing assistance on the big day itself. Weddings can sometimes be stressful when things do go wrong. If you have a professional, they can handle the little details and any emergencies that might come up. This will allow you, your spouse-to-be, your family and your guests to simply enjoy your special day.

Apply for a credit card that has a rewards program before paying for event services. Weddings can be expensive and having a card with miles and deals is vital. All of these charges add up quickly when paying for a wedding, allowing you to rack up some great rewards in the process.

Make certain to send an online itinerary to your guests with the events, so they know how they should schedule their day and which part they are looking to attend. Include relevant information about the rehearsal dinner, reception and so on, so that each person knows where to be.

Let your control issues go, and allow your friends and family to get involved in the planning of your wedding. It is natural to want to participate in all aspects of planning, especially since your wedding is such a personal affair. However, there may be a point when you are in over your head, and in such cases, it is important to recognize that it might be better to trust a more qualified professional to do the job properly.

If you want to avoid allergies or the expense of floral arrangements, consider using potted plants to decorate your wedding space. You also have several choices for pot decorations. For example, two common pot options are ceramic pots and terracotta stoneware. You can also decorate the pots yourself by painting them, or dressing them up with ribbons. With the potted plants, you can either take them home for yourself, or you can go ahead and let guests take them home as wedding gifts.

One key consideration when setting up seating for your wedding meal is to avoid having an odd number of guests at any table. If you put people of the same age together at tables they will have more to talk about.

Divide your table settings evenly. Don't put an odd number of people at any table. Group people at tables by age so that common ground for conversations exists.

If you are planning an outdoor reception, make sure that your caterer is aware of this. Some foods are not suitable for an outdoor reception because they may not keep well or they may fly away in heavy wind gusts. You may consider using decorative covers for your dishes. If you feel a need to have cold drinks present, a mini refrigerator should work nicely.

Apply this advice for a well planned wedding that gives you enough time to relax and remember why you are getting married in the first place. Your wedding will be a day you will never forget, so make it what you want it to be.

Junior dos Santos wins, transforms from power puncher to happiest man on the planet

Junior dos Santos defended the UFC belt at UFC 146. In the second round, the barrage of dos Santos' punches were too much for Frank Mir. Referee Herb Dean stopped the fight, and a smile took over dos Santos face.

When UFC commentator Joe Rogan asked JDS how he was feeling, the jubilant heavyweight yelled into the microphone.

"I'm feeling awesome, man!"

He smiled his way through the interview then talked about the young kids he works with in Brazil. He brought one of them with him to the fight. After hoisting the shy boy on his shoulders, JDS kept him there while posing for post-fight pictures.

[Kevin Iole: Junior dos Santos rocks Frank Mir at UFC 146]

In that 15-minute span, dos Santos showed what is so likable about the heavyweight champ. He can put on an exciting fight, hammering Mir so badly that his face was already swollen and bruised by the end of the first round. As soon as the bout was stopped, dos Santos' killer instinct subsided. He became the happy, smiling man who loved his job and wanted to share that joy with everyone he met.

Have you ever heard of a company called Credit 911 debt consolidation?

Question by Freddy Finger: Have you ever heard of a company called Credit 911 debt consolidation?
I am looking for a business that can help with debt consolidation and settlement. I was looking at a business called Credit 911. Has anyone had any experience with them? Thanks in advance.

Best answer:

Answer by Shaula Brandt
Credit 911 and virtually all of these type of debt consolidation companies are a big rip off. The interest rates are extremely high. Even over a five year period, little, if any of the principle on the consolidation loan will be paid?it is all interest.

Companies like these are a scam and a rip off.

Lawyer: Blind activist's brother missing in China

Blind social activist Chen Guangcheng is starting a new life of freedom in the U.S. NBC's Michelle Franzen reports.

By Reuters

BEIJING -- The brother of blind activist Chen Guangcheng has gone missing, a lawyer said on Saturday, days after he fled his village in northeastern China to seek help for his son who has been detained in a case that has become a rallying point among rights activists.

Chen Guangfu, the eldest brother of Chen Guangcheng, fled his home in Shandong province and arrived in Beijing on Wednesday to seek legal help for his son, Chen Kegui, who is being held on an attempted murder charge.

He appears to have become the latest target of the government's reprisals against Chen Guangcheng's family in the wake of the blind activist's escape from his village in late April after 19 months of detention at home.

Blind Chinese activist Chen in US: 'Promote justice and fairness in China'

Chen Guangcheng took refuge in the U.S. Embassy, where he stayed for six days and sparked a diplomatic crisis between China and the United States. That crisis, which overshadowed a visit by Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, was finally defused last Saturday when China allowed Chen to fly to the United States to study.

Chen Guangfu did not return to his hotel room in Beijing on Friday night, Shandong-based lawyer Liu Weiguo told Reuters.

Zhao Wei, a Shandong supporter of Chen Guangcheng's family, was the last person to have contact with Chen Guangfu before they parted ways on Friday afternoon, Liu said.

Blind social activist Chen Guangcheng leaves China to start a new life of freedom in the U.S. Angus Walker reports.

"As of now, there's still no news on Brother Guangfu," Liu said. "We're not optimistic. Guangcheng is also very worried. He's contacting friends to look (for him)."

The news of Chen Guangfu's disappearance comes three days after the 55-year-old farmer and odd job laborer recounted to Reuters details of his own torture and reprisals by authorities since his brother's escape.

Chen Guangfu said he was restricted from leaving his village and that police in Shandong warned him they would increase the sentence for his son, Chen Kegui, if he gave interviews.

His son, Chen Kegui, 32, was charged with "intentional homicide" for using knives to fend off local officials who burst into his home on April 27, the day after they discovered his blind uncle had escaped.

He could face the death penalty. His lawyers, denied access to him last week, said he did not kill anyone.

Michael Posner, U.S. assistant secretary of state for democracy, human rights and labor, said on Thursday the United States was closely monitoring Chen's family in China.

Chen Guangcheng urged authorities in Beijing on Thursday to prosecute "lawless" officials who harassed and abused the self-taught lawyer, his family and supporters, saying such prosecutions could help China establish rule of law.

Changing Patterns of Computing Disciplines | Education in Pakistan

Changing Patterns of Computing Disciplines

Computing is an interdisciplinary discipline that crosses the boundaries between mathematics, science, engineering, business and social sciences.? It consists of multiple fields including computer science, computer engineering, information systems, information technology, and software engineering (ACM/IEEE, 2001).? These fields are inter-related but they are quite different from each other. This dynamic nature of computing discipline propelled the international community to devise a model curriculum for computing.

The history of computing curriculum development can be traced back to 1965 when a preliminary version of the recommendations for Computer Science curriculum was published by the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM, 1965). Since then the educators and professionals all over the world are striving to formalize the fundamental principles that distinguish the goals and methods of computing from those of other related disciplines.

In early days, the term ?computer science? was used as a common notion for computing discipline. With the passage of time, the nature of basic principles, methods, techniques and concepts evolves as the discipline evolves, and new principles replace old ones. Typically there are always strong resistances to change (Lawrence, 1954); therefore, these new developments were sometimes seriously questioned by believers in old principles. For example, Hilbert?s principle that formal mathematical theorems are provable by logical inference was questioned by Kurt Godel (1931), Alonzo Church & Alan Turing (1936), who argued that logic cannot completely prove all mathematical theorems. Similarly, many contradictory views of computing like the mathematical worldview (Davis, 1958 ) vs the interactive worldview (Goldin? & Wegner, 2008),? algorithmic programming? (Knuth 1968; Hopcroft & Ullman, 969 ) vs? contemporary programming (Rice & Rice 1969)? opened up new horizons for computing (Sipser, 2005).

Much efforts have been made to understand this rapidly expanding? nature of computing which include the recommendations of ACM Curriculum Committee on Computer Science (ACM, 1969; 1977; 1979), IEEE Computer Society Education Committee/Model Curriculum Subcommittee. (IEEE, 1976), IEEE Computer Society Educational Activities Board/Model Program Committee (IEEE, 1983), Report on the ACM Task Force on the Core of Computer Science (Denning , et al. , 1988).

Prior to the 1990s, many international bodies were producing their own curriculum recommendations. But, in 1991, ACM and IEEE-CS published a joint curriculum ? Known as Computing Curricula 1991 or CC?91 ? for four-year Bachelor?s degree programs in Computer Science and Computer Engineering (ACM/IEEE-CS, 1991). At that time Computing was restricted to three disciplines ? Computer Engineering, Computer Science and Information Systems (See fig 1). In 1997, IS ?97 Model Curriculum and Guidelines for Undergraduate Degree Programs in Information Systems (ACM, 1997) was also published.

By the end of the 1990s, global community started realizing that the field of computing had not only grown rapidly but had also grown in many dimensions. Different kinds of degree programs were offered by different academic institution which brought in the problem of degree accreditation. Consequently, in 2001, ACM and IEEE-CS joint task force produced Computing Curricula 2001 (ACM/IEEE, 2001) which further expanded the concept of Computing into four distinct disciplines ? Computer Science (CS), Computer Engineering (CE), Information Systems (IS) and Software Engineering (SE). In response to the CC2001 model, the Information Systems, the Software Engineering and Computer Engineering communities published their own curriculum recommendation reports reports (ACM/AIS/AITP, 2002), (ACM/IEEE, 2004a) and (ACM/IEEE, 2004a) respectively.

The inventions of digital electronics gave birth to ?digital revolution which brought digital calculators and computer systems into the access of public domain. These gadgets not only revolutionized the conventional concepts of calculation, but also changed the way data was stored, retrieved and controlled. Computers became essential tools at every level of most organizations, and networked computer systems became the information backbone of organizations (Kotkin, 2000).

The digital revolution not only affected the way scientists conduct their research but also expedite the pace of inventions (Thomson, 2007). High pace innovation in technologies for communication, computation, interactivity, and delivery of information introduced invention like ?the Internet?, ?the World Wide Web?, ?email?, ?bulletin board system?, ?virtual communities?, ?E-commerce? and? other online technologies which brought a paradigm shift in business world -? from data processing to information processing ? converting industrial society to an ?information society (Cohen, 2009). Such inventions converted computer technology into information technology (IT). While this paradigm shift improved productivity, it also created new work place challenges regarding the development, operation, maintenance, and up gradation of organizational IT infrastructure (Samuelson, 1995). By the end of the 1990s, it became clear that the existing computing degree programs were not producing graduates who had the right mix of knowledge and skills to meet these challenges. Consequently, colleges and universities developed new degree programs to fill this crucial void (Denning, 2001); thus information technology was added as an independent discipline into the computing domain (Burrell, 1997; Lunt, et. al., 2003a; 2003b; Lunt, et. al., 2004; Lunt, et. al., 2005).

The Computing Curricula 2005 (CC2005) produced by the ACM, AIS and IEEE-CS Joint Task Force identified the distinctive features of these five distinct but overlapping disciplines of computing and laid down the key characteristics and skill set which every graduate in their respective discipline must acquire. These recommendations help academic institutions to standardize their computing related degree programs according to the need of the international market. However, the curriculum development process has not stopped yet. ?Newly emerging economic trends, escalating pace of Information Technology (IT) usage, development outsourcing, and the emergence of knowledge economies have raised new issues. Recently, the international community has put forward a draft version of Computer Science Curricula 2013 (ACM, 2012) which has redefines the knowledge units and provides concrete guidance on curricular structure and development in a variety of institutional contexts.

?Distinctive Characteristics of Computing Discipline

Computing Curricula 2005 (CC2005) produced by the ACM, AIS and IEEE-CS Joint Task Force identified the distinctive features of these five disciplines, shown in figure below, and explined in below pargarps:

Computer Science spans a wide range, from its theoretical and algorithmic foundations to cutting-edge developments in robotics, computer vision, intelligent systems, bioinformatics, and other exciting areas. Computer scientists develop new programming approaches for software development, devise new ways to use computers and develop effective ways to solve computing problems. While other disciplines produce graduates with more immediately relevant job-related skills, computer science offers a comprehensive foundation for research and innovation.

Software Engineering is the discipline of developing and maintaining software systems that behave reliably and efficiently, are affordable to develop and maintain, and satisfy all the requirements that customers have defined for them.? Software engineering is different in character from other engineering disciplines due to both the intangible nature of software and related operations. It seeks to integrate the principles of mathematics and computer science with the engineering practices developed for tangible, physical artifacts. Software engineering students learn more about software reliability and maintenance and focus more on developing and maintaining software techniques. While Computer Science students just acquire superficial knowledge of these aspects.

Computer Engineering is a discipline that embodies the science and technology of design, construction, implementation, and maintenance of software and hardware components of modern computing systems and computer-controlled equipment. Computer engineering has traditionally been viewed as a combination of both computer science (CS) and electrical engineering (EE) (CE2004). Its curriculum focuses on the theories, principles, and practices of traditional electrical engineering and mathematics and applies them to the problems of designing computers and computer-based devices.? Computer engineering students study the design of digital hardware systems including communications systems, computers, and devices that contain computers. They study software development, focusing on software for digital devices and their interfaces with users and other devices.

Information systems programs make graduates ready to integrate information technology solutions and business processes to meet the information needs of businesses and other enterprises, enabling them to achieve their objectives in an effective, efficient way. Information systems curriculum emphasizes various aspects of information, and views technology as a tool for generating, processing, and distributing information. Students of this program learn how computer systems can help an enterprise in defining and achieving its goals, and the processes that an enterprise can implement or improve using information technology. They learn both technical and organizational factors to help organizations to determine how information and technology-enabled business processes can provide a competitive advantage.

Information Technology emphasis on the technology itself whereas Information Systems focuses on the information aspects only.? Today, organizations of every kind are dependent on information technology.? IT specialists possess the right combination of knowledge and practical, hands-on expertise to take care of both an organization?s information technology infrastructure and the people who use it.

Distinct Characteristics of IT, CS and SE graduates

Over the past sixty years, computing has become an extremely broad domain that extends well beyond the boundaries of computer science to encompass such independent disciplines as computer engineering, software engineering, information systems, information technology and many others. Realizing this breadth of computing domain, the global community deduced that no group representing a single specialty could hope to do justice to computing as a whole (SE2004). Consequently, independent Task Force on each discipline was assigned the task of curriculum development in their respective field. ?Keeping in view the distinctive nature of IT, CS, and SE the Task Force of respective discipline laid down the key characteristics of graduates of these disciplines. These characteristics are shown in Table 1. ?Every graduate in their respective discipline must acquire a skill set that enables him or her to successfully perform integrative tasks, including the ability to:

Information Technology (IT ? 2005) Software Engineering (SE ? 2004) Computer ? Science (CS 2008)
- ? Use and apply current technical ? concepts and practices in the core information technologies;- ? Analyze, identify and define the ? requirements that must be satisfied to address problems or opportunities ? faced by organizations or individuals;

- ? Identify and analyze criteria and ? specifications appropriate to specific problems, and plan strategies for ? their solution.

- ? Understand the elements of ? computational thinking. This includes recognizing its broad relevance in ? everyday life as well as its applicability within other domains, and being ? able to apply it in appropriate circumstances.

- ? Analyze the extent to which a ? computer-based system meets the criteria defined for its current use and ? future development.

- ? Deploy appropriate theory, practices, ? and tools for the specification, design, implementation, and maintenance as ? well as the evaluation of computer-based systems.

- ? Recognize and be guided by the social, ? professional, legal and ethical as well as cultural issues involved in the ? use of computer technology. Increasingly cultural issues are also relevant.

2. COMPUTING DISCIPLINE IN PAKISTAN

In Pakistan, at university level computer education can be traced back to late 70?s when a department of computer science was established at Quaid-e-Azam University, Islamabad. Presently, 74 public and 62 private universities including their affiliated colleges are offering degree programs in various computing disciplines.? To ensure the quality of education students receive in universities and institutions, the Higher Education Commission (HEC) has setup an accreditation authority: National Computing Education Accreditation Council (NCEAC). The accreditation council periodically evaluates, scrutinizes and monitors the standards followed in different Universities, Degree Awarding Institutions and their affiliated colleges offering computing degree programs.

In addition, realizing the need of standardization, HEC as a part of its constitutional responsibility, has constituted four committees, as stated in [4], involving the respective expert faculty members both from public and private sectors throughout the country. All these committees worked independently in their respective domains through extensive interaction and consensus of national and international experts in the field and revise the existing curriculum after every three year. Recently, in 2009, the curriculum revision committee has published the revised curricula for BS, MS and PhD programs. The revised curricula [4] have been circulated nationwide for implementation.

Managing Home Property Through Global Relocation Services

It can be a challenge to move overseas. If your move is temporary, and if you want to hang on to valuable real estate at home, it can be even more difficult. You can get friends or family to help you manage your property, or you can make use of global relocation services that are qualified to help you.

There are positive aspects to each. Enlisting your family to handle things while you?re away means someone you already know and hopefully trust is going to take care of all the details.

The con is ? it?s your family. Just like the warnings about lending money to family, asking them to deal with the hassles, legal issues, and stress of managing your property can ruin the relationship. You certainly can?t handle it yourself from afar.

The Challenge
If you?re moving overseas and rent your hometown real estate, there are many things to consider when renting your property. If you own rental properties, it adds more of a challenge. Dealing with various issues from half way across the globe is not at all ideal. Hiring a professional can save a lot of headaches when it comes to:

??? ?Collecting rent
??? ?Knowing the legal process for eviction
??? ?Handling maintenance issues

What do you do when something needs immediate repair, or in a situation where rent is overdue? Receiving calls at odd hours, or trying to collect from, or even evict a tenant could prove to be a nightmare. You don?t want to put family or friends in harm?s way if a touchy situation arises with your tenants.

Protecting Yourself
Lay out the expectations with your global relocation service. Have a contract that includes a clause for spending. Set it up so that the agent must ask your permission before spending certain amounts of money on the property.

These professionals will likely have an errors and omissions insurance to handle disaster and legal issues. For instance, if there?s a fire ? professionals can obtain bids, hire contractors, supervise, and coordinate payments with the insurance company. It would be a lot to ask of someone close to you.

If you aren?t happy with the management provided, you can fire the company? it?s a lot easier than firing a family member.

Are you being transferred, or sent overseas but don?t want to sell your current property? Do you need help finding a new home for the relocation? Contact us and we can help you sort out the details.
