Cantaloupe illnesses and deaths expected to rise

(AP) ? Federal health officials said Wednesday more illnesses and possibly more deaths may be linked to an outbreak of listeria in cantaloupe in coming weeks.

So far, the outbreak has caused at least 72 illnesses ? including up to 16 deaths ? in 18 states, making it the deadliest food outbreak in the United States in more than a decade.

The heads of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Food and Drug Administration said consumers who have cantaloupes produced by Jensen Farms in Colorado should throw them out. If they are not sure where the fruit is from, they shouldn't eat it.

Neither the government nor Jensen Farms has supplied a list of retailers who may have sold the fruit. Officials say consumers should ask retailers about the origins of their cantaloupe. If they still aren't sure, they should get rid of it.

"If it's not Jensen Farms, it's OK to eat," said Thomas Frieden, director of the CDC. "But if you can't confirm it's not Jensen Farms, then it's best to throw it out."

Jensen Farms of Holly, Colo. says it shipped cantaloupes to 25 states, though the FDA has said it may be more, and illnesses have been discovered in several states that were not on the shipping list. A spokeswoman for Jensen Farms said the company's product is often sold and resold, so they do not always know where it went.

The recalled cantaloupes may be labeled "Colorado Grown," ''Distributed by Frontera Produce," ''Jensenfarms.com" or "Sweet Rocky Fords." Not all of the recalled cantaloupes are labeled with a sticker, the FDA said. The company said it shipped out more than 300,000 cases of cantaloupes that contained five to 15 melons, meaning the recall involved 1.5 million to 4.5 million pieces of fruit.

The FDA said none of the cantaloupes had been exported, reversing an earlier statement that some of the tainted melons had been shipped abroad.

Frieden and FDA Commissioner Margaret Hamburg said that illnesses are expected for weeks to come because the incubation period for listeria can be a month or even longer. That means that someone who ate contaminated cantaloupe last week may not get sick until next month. Jensen Farms last shipped cantaloupes on Sept. 10. The shelf life is about two weeks.

"We will see more cases likely through October," Hamburg said.

The Food and Drug Administration said state health officials found listeria in cantaloupes taken from Colorado grocery stores and from a victim's home that were grown at Jensen Farms. Matching strains of the disease were found on equipment and cantaloupe samples at Jensen Farms' packing facility in Granada, Colo.

Sherri McGarry, a senior adviser in the FDA's Office of Foods, said the agency is looking at the farm's water supply and possible animal intrusions among other things in trying to figure out how the cantaloupes became contaminated. Listeria bacteria grow in moist, muddy conditions and are often carried by animals.

The health officials said this is the first known outbreak of listeria in cantaloupe. Listeria is generally found in processed meats and unpasteurized milk and cheese, though there have been a growing number of outbreaks in produce. Hamburg called the outbreak a "surprise" and said the agencies are studying it closely to find out how it happened.

Cantaloupe is often the source of outbreaks, however. Frieden said CDC had identified 10 other cantaloupe outbreaks in the last decade, most of them from salmonella.

Listeria is more deadly than well-known pathogens like salmonella and E. coli, though those outbreaks generally cause many more illnesses. Twenty-one people died in an outbreak of listeria poisoning in 1998 traced to contaminated hot dogs and possibly deli meats made by Bil Mar Foods, a subsidiary of Sara Lee Corp. Another large listeria outbreak, in 1985, killed 52 people and was linked to Mexican-style soft cheese.

Listeria generally only sickens the elderly, pregnant women and others with compromised immune systems. The CDC said the median age of those sickened is 78 and that 1 in 5 who contract the disease can die from it. Symptoms include fever and muscle aches, often with other gastrointestinal symptoms.

Unlike many pathogens, listeria bacteria can grow at room temperatures and even refrigerator temperatures. It is hardy and can linger long after the source of the contamination is gone ? health officials say people who may have had the contaminated fruit in their kitchens should clean and sanitize any surfaces it may have touched.

The CDC said Tuesday that 13 deaths are linked to the tainted fruit. State and local officials say they are investigating three additional deaths that may be connected.

The death toll released by the CDC Tuesday surpassed the number of deaths linked to an outbreak of salmonella in peanuts almost three years ago. Nine people died in that outbreak. The CDC reported four deaths in New Mexico, two deaths each in Colorado and Texas and one death each in Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, Oklahoma and Maryland.

New Mexico officials said Tuesday they are investigating a fifth death, while health authorities in Kansas and Wyoming said they too are investigating additional deaths possibly linked to the tainted fruit.

The CDC reported the 72 illnesses and deaths in 18 states. Cases of listeria were reported in California, Colorado, Florida, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Maryland, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Texas, Virginia, West Virginia, Wisconsin, and Wyoming. The most illnesses were reported in Colorado, which has seen 15 sickened. Fourteen illnesses were reported in Texas, 10 in New Mexico and eight in Oklahoma.

While most healthy adults can consume listeria with no ill effects, it can kill the elderly and those with compromised immune systems. It is also dangerous to pregnant women because it easily passes through to the fetus. The CDC's Frieden said that two of those sickened were pregnant women but they have since recovered.

Vienna-based Speedinvest Closes $10m Fund For Central Europe

speedinvestSlowly, but surely, Vienna is building its own reputation as a startup hotspot and eventually there might be a fight between Berlin, London, Copenhagen and Vienna, although London and Berlin are ahead at the moment. There have been a number of large exits driven by Austrian-born founders (exits from UCP, Jahjah, 3united and last.fm exceed 1 billion USD). Companies such as Wikitude, Runtastic and Lookk. However the growing startup community, especially with founders emerging from Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) countries, faces a lack of adequate investors. Now Speedinvest, an early stage Super Angel fund, has just announced that they've closed their first $10 million dollar fund targeted towards early stage mobile and web startups coming out of CEE.

Survey: Health insurance costs surge in 2011 ? Health & Fitness ...

?

INDIANAPOLIS ? The cost of employer-sponsored health insurance surged this year, snapping a trend toward moderate growth, but experts say these increases may slow again in 2012.

Annual premiums for family coverage climbed 9 percent and surpassed $15,000 for the first time, according to a report released Tuesday by the Kaiser Family Foundation and the Health Research and Educational Trust. Premiums for single coverage rose 8 percent compared to 2010.

That compares to increases last year of 3 and 5 percent for family and single coverage, respectively. The study shows that premiums for both family and single coverage have more than doubled since 2001, while worker wages have risen 34 percent.

Kaiser CEO Drew Altman said a number of factors may have played a role in this year?s percentage jump. He noted that health care costs continue to rise, and insurer profits and the health care overhaul also have some impact.

The overhaul, which Congress passed last year, aims to eventually cover millions of uninsured people. Kaiser said initial provisions of the law contributed between 1 and 2 percentage points to this year?s premium hikes, which is about what many insurance analysts and benefits experts expected.

Companies and workers split premiums for employer-sponsored coverage, the most common form of health insurance in the United States, and employers generally pick up 70 percent of the bill or more.

Businesses likely reacted to these cost increases by giving a smaller raise or no wage increase to their workers, said Helen Darling, CEO of the National Business Group on Health, a nonprofit organization that represents large employers on health care issues.

?(Workers) basically are giving their pay raise to the health system,? said Darling, who was not involved with the Kaiser study. ?It?s really bad news.?

The annual study was conducted earlier this year and includes results from more than 2,000 companies nationwide. It also indicates that many more families than previously believed have benefited from a popular provision in the overhaul that allows young adults to stay on a parent?s health plan until they turn 26.

Kaiser asked employers how many people were added to their insurance plans because of this provision and estimated that 2.3 million young adults enrolled. Last week the government had reported that the number of uninsured young adults had dropped by nearly 1 million since the law took effect, a finding independently corroborated by Gallup.

The difference isn?t necessarily a contradiction.

The Kaiser survey may have counted young adults who were covered by a more expensive policy and switched to their parent?s plan to save money.

Many workers are about to receive notices from their employers regarding health insurancecoverage for next year. Altman said he cannot say whether this year?s increase represents a bad omen for 2012 or if it is just a one-year blip.

Insurers have been saying for months that health care use is growing more slowly this year, something industry observers pin on a sluggish economy. Altman and other benefits experts say that could lead to lower premium increases next year, since insurers base their rates in part on how often people use care.

Benefits consultant Mercer said earlier this month an employer survey it did shows that 2012 health insurance costs will rise by the smallest amount since 1997.

The Kaiser survey shows a steady increase in companies offering high-deductible plans, which come with lower premiums but make consumers pay more out of pocket for care. Thisinsurance is often paired with health savings accounts that let people save pretax for medical expenses.

Altman said he expects that trend to continue growing as employers try to control premiums.

?This is the main tool that employers have in the toolbox right now, so we?re going to see more and more high-deductible plans with bigger and bigger deductibles,? he said.

Steelers steal one from Colts

Indy loses another QB, watches as Pittsburgh boots FG for 23-20 victory

By MICHAEL MAROT

updated 11:35 p.m. ET Sept. 25, 2011

INDIANAPOLIS - During the final moments of a tight game Sunday night, Pittsburgh relied on its old standbys.

Troy Polamalu and Ben Roethlisberger.

Polamalu returned a fumble 16 yards to give Pittsburgh the lead, and Roethlisberger drove the Steelers 60 yards to set up Shaun Suisham for a 38-yard field goal with 4 seconds left that sent the Steelers to a 23-20 victory at Indianapolis.

Just like old times.

"Our defense, they're fun to watch," Roethlisberger said. "They make exciting plays when they need to, and they're on my side."

One strong final burst was enough after the Steelers looked out of sorts for the first 54 minutes.

Roethlisberger lost two fumbles and threw an interception during an 11-minute first-half stretch. Pittsburgh (2-1) managed just 67 yards rushing all night, and the vaunted Steelers defense produced just one sack.

Polamalu, Roethlisberger and James Harrison bailed them out. Again.

Harrison's crunching sack of Curtis Painter with 5:13 left knocked the ball out and the opportunistic Polamalu scooped it up and jogged into the end zone to make it 20-13. After the Colts tied it with 2:09 left, Roethlisberger delivered another one of his patented late drives, setting up Suisham for the winning kick.

Roethlisberger was 25 of 37 for 364 yards with one touchdown. Mike Wallace caught five passes for 144 yards and an 81-yard score, the longest of his career.

And they won ugly.

"We don't care how it looks," coach Mike Tomlin said. "We just want to get out of stadiums with wins, particularly road stadiums and AFC ones."

Sunday's game wasn't supposed to be so difficult for the defending AFC champs.

But Indianapolis (0-3), which has won 16 Sunday night games since 2000 ? more than any other team, used the national stage to send a message. They're not going away quickly or quietly, even with Peyton Manning out.

The Colts defense had three sacks, forced three turnovers, delivered a plethora of big hits and even scored Indy's first first-half touchdown of the season.

It just wasn't enough.

"We don't care about second-place prizes or playing good for a half or three quarters," said Dwight Freeney, who had two sacks and forced a fumble that was returned for a TD. "We didn't play good enough to win."

Indy's effort was complicated by injuries.

Five Colts starters, including Manning, were inactive. Indianapolis then lost backup quarterback Kerry Collins to a possible concussion that could keep him out of next Monday's game at Tampa Bay.

Collins' exit early in the fourth quarter pinned the Colts' hopes on Painter, who entered with a career quarterback rating of 9.8. But he nearly pulled it off.

Collins was 13 of 29 for 93 yards but just 3 of 9 in the second half. Painter was 5 of 11 for 60 yards with a 62.7 rating and led Indy to the most meaningful offensive touchdown of the season. Joseph Addai carried 17 times for 86 yards and a 6-yard TD run that tied it at 20 with 2:09 to go.

"We still are measured around here by wins," coach Jim Caldwell said. "That's what counts. But the guys played tough, played hard, and you certainly can see evidence that we're getting a little bit better, but the key is, you've got to win."

Initially, it looked like the Steelers would win easily.

They got a 48-yard field goal from Suisham on the opening possession and took advantage of a terrible mismatch ? linebacker Pat Angerer on Wallace ? for the 81-yard pass that made it 10-0.

Then Indy's defense did its best Pittsburgh impersonation.

Robert Mathis stripped Roethlisberger and recovered the ball, which led to a field goal. Dwight Freeney followed that with a strip sack from the opposite side. Jamaal Anderson scooped up the ball, cut to the middle of the field and used a brilliant block from Kavell Conner to free himself for a 47-yard score.

On the next play from scrimmage, Roethlisberger's deep pass for Emmanuel Sanders was picked off by rookie Joe Lefeged. Adam Vinatieri then hit a 25-yard field goal to make it 13-10 at the half.

Suddenly, the Steelers were in trouble.

"We just couldn't get things going with the turnovers," receiver Hines Ward said. "It looked like it was going to be a blowout, but we let that team back in."

Suisham tied it with a 44-yard field goal with 12:10 to go, and the Steelers were in a good position when Harrison smacked Painter in the back and Polamalu scored.

But Painter answered with an 80-yard drive, getting the tying score on Addai's run with 2:09 left.

"We walked out of here with a win. Did we play well? No, we know we didn't play well," Ward said. "Do we got to get better? Yes, and we will get better."

NOTES: Manning made his first appearance at Lucas Oil Stadium since an Aug. 26 preseason game but spent the night in the coaches' booth trying to help his team. ... Wallace had his sixth straight 100-yard game. ... Reggie Wayne became the second Colts receiver with 800 career catches with 10:22 left in the first half. ... The 81-yard TD pass was the third longest of Roethlisberger's career. ... Steelers tackles Marcus Gilbert and Doug Legursky both left in the second half with shoulder injuries. ... Colts cornerback Justin Tryon also left in the third quarter with a hamstring injury.

Missoni evokes warm weather destinations (AP)

MILAN ? Milan designers are in denial.

Or it could just be an act of collective will to dispel the growing economic gloom.

Because when they look into their crystal ball for next summer, they see the tropics. They see parties. They see fun, a return to the Roaring '20s, the carefree '50s.

Let's hope they are right.

In any case, women are being encouraged to show their under garments, slips sticking beneath hemlines and sheer dresses requiring coordinated lingerie. Dresses are shoulder-baring. Colors are often bold. Gold and silver lame shine throughout the collections.

___

DOLCE&GABBANA

Tossing the current global bad news to the wind, the designing duo Dolce&Gabbana turned the runway into an Italian summer fair, complete with traditional multicolored lights and open air market goodies.

Inspiration for the spring-summer 2012 collection shown Sunday was actress Sophia Loren at her sexiest when she danced the mambo in a 1955 Italian film.

Front-row guest American actress Scarlett Johansson, the face for Dolce&Gabbana's cosmetic line, wore a beige body-hugging gown from the maison and followed the show with particular interest.

To the beat of "Ehi Mambo," the models swung their hips down the runway in halter sun dress with full skirt and small waist or bra tops paired with shorts, all worn with fetching high heeled sandals. Many of these outfits were cheerfully printed with riches from the Italian south, from oranges and lemons to red peppers, eggplant and onions.

"It was hard to make onions look sexy," Stefano Gabbana joked with reporters before the show.

Not only did the duo print fabric with fruits, vegetables, and different shapes of pasta, but they managed to turn garlic cloves into earrings and macaroni pasta into a handle on a raffia bag.

___

MISSONI

Missoni evoked warm weather destinations from Spain to the Caribbean in the womenswear collection for next spring and summer.

Angela Missoni created the mood in both cut ? asymmetrical shapes, off-shoulder looks ? and color ? ultramarine with emerald, bold magenta, purple, yellow and chocolate ? in the collection previewed Sunday during Milan Fashion Week.

A Spanish flamenco dancer was suggested in off-shoulder top with ruffled asymmetrical skirts creating a swishing motion that invites the wearer to swirl around in dance.

The Caribbean was recalled in jungle prints, layers of ruffles and the pleasing combination of yellow and chocolate bringing to mind a plantation.

Missoni's trademark knitwear was the mainstay of the collection, but Missoni also wove together leather for a more textured look and mixed in softer fabrics like silk, chiffon and rayon.

The collection was on the racy side with lots of sheer fabrics ? a look hot on Milan runways this round ? requiring matching undergarments to complete the style. And Missoni also allowed necklines to plunge.

In a nod to modesty, she offered fringe, on necklaces and on finely knit shawls.

___

MARNI

"Your slip is showing," used to be mom's warning before you went out the door.

Thanks to Consuelo Castiglioni, creative designer and owner of the Marni brand, it's no longer a problem.

Her latest women's collection for spring-summer 2012, shown Sunday, features a flesh-colored sheer organza slip which hangs down below the hem of a short skirt or mini-dress.

The slips came with matching beige ankle socks worn with pumps or high-heeled sandals.

Overall, the new Marni silhouette is beguilingly innocent, A-line and with a nipped waist. Jackets tend to be long, worn over a short skirt with the new slip hemline. Trousers have little space in the Marni closet.

The palette is young, ranging from aqua and pink to spurts of yellow, white, brown and rust. There is a lot of embroidery in the collection which mixes plastic and sequins, raffia and crystals to create a three-dimensional effect for floral or geometric prints.

___

FERRAGAMO

Ferragamo's latest look packs easily for the tropics. Or the red carpet.

Lucky the girl who gets to do both.

Ferragamo designer Massimiliano Giornetti was decidedly fantasy-driven in the collection previewed Sunday during Milan Fashion Week ? mostly leaving the workaday city behind.

For an exotic getaway, the Ferragamo woman wears chic dresses in chiffon and silk that drape the body elegantly. The dresses sometimes are halters, or knotted to create a sexy bandeau top that wraps sensually around the neck. Colors are bold reds and purples, prints straight out of the tropics.

Sticking to Ferragamo's classic roots, Giornetti sometimes topped the dresses with men's jackets.

For awards season, Ferragamo created gowns that would trigger flashbulbs on any red carpet. Try a gold lame leopard print featuring layers of chiffon, a leg-baring slit, and a final flourish: a silk scarf over a bare shoulder.

For the party after, there was a fun and flirty flapper-style dress ? a period oft evoked during Milan Fashion Week ? with red and purple strings of beads that dance in the light.

Shoes were high-heeled strappy sandals featuring a grooved heel from Ferragamo's archives, circa 1935. Colorful clutches and bucket bags were made of plaited leather.

___

LAURA BIAGIOTTI

Designer Laura Biagiotti, who has traveled the world with her fashion suitcase ? she was the first Italian designer to show in China in 1988, and seven years later the first to show in Russia ? stays closer to home this round, presenting a summer collection inspired by Venice, one of her first loves.

Not only is the show presented Sunday full of Venetian references from the brocade and jeweled embroidery to the rich pastel palette, to the one-shouldered embroidered lace dress dedicated to the city's film festival and to the pop-glam sunglasses worn by American art collector and longtime Venice resident Peggy Guggenheim.

The "queen of cashmere," as Biagiotti is known, dedicates a large part of the collection to knitwear, this round combining silk, cashmere and linen yarns enriched by gold and silver threads.

To further honor the city she "adores," Biagiotti brings back her popular Venezia fragrance, first launched in the 1990s.

Mesothelioma Is An Incurable ... - Asbestos Mesothelioma Cancer

Report by frank vanderlugt

Mesothelioma is a cancer which is connected to exposure to asbestos fibers in 70 to eighty % of circumstances.

The National Cancer institute defines malignant mesothelioma as ?a rare sort of cancer?a illness in which cancer (malignant) cells are found in the sac lining the chest (the pleura), the lining of the belly cavity (the peritoneum) or the lining about the coronary heart (the pericardium).?

It is 1 of the most lethal cancers known to man the regular daily life span of an afflicted man or woman from the time of diagnosis until finally loss of life is significantly less than 24 months.

Mesothelioma develops in about three,000 United States citizens each yr. Most of individuals diagnosed have a heritage of occupational exposure to asbestos, however a few have environmental or home contact. This cancer has an incredibly lengthy latency period an exposure period of time of as tiny as one or two months can result in a mesothelioma up to fifty a long time later. Individuals who had speak to with asbestos as far back again as the 1940s are now becoming diagnosed with this condition. In reality, the average time between publicity and the development of mesothelioma is 35-forty decades.

When asbestos first arrived into use, its risks have been unidentified, and it was commonly utilized as a fire-retardant materials. Many men and women worked with this deadly substance, unaware that it would eliminate them numerous decades later on. Workers this sort of as bricklayers, insulaters, plasterers, electricians, mechanics, carpenters, and other tradesmen had been uncovered to asbestos on a everyday basis as it was contained in many insulation and development components.

Even occassional coverage to asbestos is a wellness threat, and there have been many situations of mesothelioma establishing in clients who only had quick speak to, this kind of as wives of asbestos-uncovered staff who washed their husbands? overalls.

Because of to the lengthy latency period of time and vague, diffuse first signs and symptoms, there is often a delay in accurate prognosis. As with several cancers, early signs and symptoms can be mild and non-specific. Often sufferers current with only shortness of breath and a persistent cough some present no signs and symptoms at all in the initial stages, and the ailment is first noticed on a regimen chest X-ray. 1 early tell-tale indicator is pleural effusion, a collection of fluid in the lungs. The correct lung is impacted 60% of the time, bilateral involvement currently being seen in 5% of circumstances. A lot less widespread first grievances because of to lung mesothelioma are fever, night sweats, weight damage, a raspy voice and facial inflammation. Peritoneal mesothelioma can cause stomach signs or symptoms this kind of as ache, stomach swelling, nausea, fat loss, bowel obstruction, anemia and inflammation of the feet. As the condition progresses, patients often develop significant cachexia (throwing away).

One particular of the most common signs or symptoms of mesothelioma, pleural effusion, is an accumulation of fluid amongst the parietal pleura, which covers the chest wall and diaphragm, and the visceral pleura, which covers the lungs. The two membranes are coated with mesothelial cells which, under regular conditions, make a tiny sum of fluid that functions as a lubricant between the chest wall and the lung. Any extra fluid is removed through blood and lymph vessels, as a result preserving a harmony. When far more fluid is developed than can be absorbed, an effusion types.

These effusions are referred to as either transudates and exudates. A transudate is a crystal clear fluid that kinds not because the pleural surfaces are diseased, but since of an imbalance amongst the normal manufacturing and elimination of the fluid. Frequently this is caused by congestive heart failure. An exudate, which contains several cells and proteins and is typically cloudy in colour, benefits from ailment of the pleura alone, and is widespread to mesothelioma. To differentiate in between a transudate or an exudate, a diagnostic thoracentesis, in which a needle or catheter is utilized to get a fluid sample, may be conducted.

As the quantity of excessive fluid will increase, signs and symptoms develop this kind of as shortness of breath (dyspnea), chest pain, or a non-effective dry cough. Heard via a stethoscope, normal breath seems are muted, and tapping on the chest will expose uninteresting relatively than hollow seems.

A pleural effusion can be observed with a chest X-ray, ultrasound or CT scan. Since pleural effusions are frequently induced by congestive coronary heart failure, the discovery of an effusion is not in itself right away suggestive of a malignant approach.

A histological examination of pleural fluid is detrimental in 85% of situations a definitive diagnoses is far more usually is obtained by a needle biopsy or surgical biopsy of pleural tissue.

Symptomatic treatment method of lung compression triggered by effusion is completed by software of a sclerosing agent which eliminates the house amongst the lung and the chest cavity, a method named chemical pleurodesis. Talc is usually employed, with a achievement fee of 95%. It can be administered either as a powder or as a slurry combined with saline. A surgical group opens the chest wall, removes the effusion, then collapses the lung ahead of applying the talc. When the lung is fused to the chest wall, an effusion can no more time accumulate and compress the lung. Do Life Time Paints Really Last? House Painting Tips - Home Painting

House painting can be confusing for many homeowners who are trying to balance between affordability and longevity. Many people struggle with the decision of whether to use a life time warranted paint on the exterior of their home, or a less expensive twenty-five year warranted paint. I?m often asked what I think about their prospective inclusion of life time paint for their house painting project. I usually respond by saying ?it depends? followed by a few questions to determine what they want to achieve with their house painting project.

The first thing you need to consider is: what are your expectations from life time paint? Are your expectations realistic?

Paint manufacturers love to sell you on the idea of life time paint. It is good business for them. It is certainly easy for you to fall for this seemingly incredible warranty, considering the cost of having your house painted these days, but are you getting what you believe you are getting.

There are four basic reasons you?ll need to repaint your home.

1. The paint you have now is faded and looks tired and dingy.

2. The caulked joints of your home have separated allowing water enter.

3. There are places where the paint is peeling.

4. You become tired of the old color and want to freshen up your home with new colors.

Let?s take a closer look at these 4 reasons in relation to life time paint.

This may very well be an important piece of this specific study. The truth is, life time warranted paints fade with exposure to sun light and weather, so if you?re expecting it to look fresh twenty-five years from now, then you have been misled. First, you need to read the warranty of the life time paint. Excessive fading is covered by the warranty. Notice this doesn?t mean ?no fading?. It reads the same as a lesser grade paint. Life time warranted paints lose their clarity in color over time. Now your back to the 1st reason you needed to paint to begin with. Yes, it?ll maintain its fresh look longer than a lesser grade paint, but not a lot longer.

Get the best price for house painting ? YouTube: If you want to get the best price for house painting, you have to consider more than the dollar amount of the bids you rec?

The caulked joints that have separated on your home aren?t caused from an inferior paint. Caulked joints separate due to expansion and contraction of the materials that constitute your home. Life time warranted paints cannot stop this movement; therefore, reason number two will still be in play if you paint with life time warranted paint.

For reason number three you have a clear advantage with some life time paints. Some life time paints are up to seventy percent ticker and have a greater ability to stretch. When it comes to peeling substrate, this is important, because a paint that?s seventy percent thicker and more flexible will make it much harder for the underlying paint to peel and release. Most warranties don?t cover inner layer peeling, however, most life time paints do give a limited warranty against peeling. It?s possible that the inner layers of paint are so compromised that the problem extends beyond the capabilities of life time paint. This is especially true if the wood on the house wasn?t primed before the top coat was applied when the house was built.

Check the specification of the paint carefully. Some life time paints aren?t thicker than twenty-five year paints, therefore cannot offer the same protection as the thicker life time brands when it comes to peeling.

How many people want to live with the same color on their house for the rest of their life? I have never met anyone yet that could say they did, and I?ve been in this business for over twenty-five years. The truth is most people like change. Color change is very important for most people.

The strongest reason for using life time paints really may haven?thing to do with the points listed above. It may have to do more with the fact you?re planning to change the color.

Life time paints can save you money.

If you?re planning on changing the colors of your home you may want to consider using the life time warranted paints. They can actually save you money, even though they cost nearly double the price of twenty-five year paint.

Consider this: If your planning to change colors, you probably will need 2 coats of paint, which will cost you an extra sixty to seventy percent on average. Often you?ll be able to cover with one coat using a life time paint because it?s a thicker paint. The difference between the cost of using one coat of life time paints and 2 coats of twenty-five year paint is going to be between 1,200 and 1,400 dollars. That is considerable savings.

Most manufacturers of life time warranted paints are counting on the average person moving every six to eight years. The warranty is non transferable. If you do stay in the home long enough and make a claim on the paint, they?ll prorate any refund on the paint only, but not the labor.

Homeschool Preschool | 3NM.ORG

While lately performing some analysis on the preschool learning and preschool homeschool curriculum, and what type of preschool activities would create a constructive self motivation preschool studying atmosphere for the homeschool, I came across some ideas that are so easy it was nearly embarrassing that I needed to discover this through my ?research? time.

When one preschool trainer was asked ?what?s the one preschool instructing tool or tools in your classroom that you could possibly not do with out? She answered real life stuff. Pots and pans, staplers, hole punchers, anything round the house that can present real life experiences for preschool activities.

Think about it.. Each thing you need to your homeschool preschool is just around the corner at a yard sale! If your going to show preschool homeschool your classroom needs to be set up like an actual life home. Think about that. A real life residence surroundings for the preschool little one, and you did it. Can you teach that way? After all, you can.

You probably already have and do enable your baby time to play, learn, run outdoor, and uncover the world on their travels. And also you do so in a loving environment. What you provide will far exceed what?s offered for in a public preschool studying environment.

You are the finest instructor the kid will ever have and your house is the most effective leaning atmosphere for the preschooler. You certainly needn?t spend vast sum of money equipping your house for preschool activities. As mentioned earlier, thrift stores and yard sales can present more than you might ever use. Also bear in mind, real life experiences. Let the child enable you to bake, do laundry, and other family experiences. They all provide visible, palms on, and subtle drawback solving. And you thought homeschool preschool would require a classroom setting.

Not hardly.

Whether it?s on the soccer or football field, Seymour knows how to score for North Lincoln

by Aaron Burns

North Lincoln senior Billy Seymour has been a vital player on the Knights? soccer and football teams this fall. (Aaron Burns/DW photo)

When he?s in the middle of a game or practice, Billy Seymour says he?s in his element. That?s a good thing for the North Lincoln senior, since when he isn?t in a classroom, he?s almost always on the field of competition. Because he?s a member of North Lincoln?s football and soccer teams, Seymour is always moving, and he likes it that way.
As a standout for the Knights in soccer, as well as the punter and kicker in football, Seymour said he has plenty of responsibilities to both teams. But he said the rewards far outweigh the negatives ? not that there really are any. According to Seymour, who grew up in New Jersey before his family moved to North Carolina when he was in fourth grade, the only way to enjoy life is to be doing something fun.
Whether it?s playing soccer ? the sport he took up when he was 3 years old ? football, swimming or track and field (Seymour runs the 400 and 800 meters), chances are you won?t ever see Seymour without something to do. Just a walk to a coach?s office might take a few minutes, because Seymour gets stopped by friends for a quick chat. He?s gained some popularity at the school, but then again it?s hard to keep a low profile when your name graces the roster of more than one sports team. Plus, Seymour admitted, he?s not the quietest person in the world.
Seymour proudly said that at some point, he?s played soccer, football, baseball, basketball, lacrosse, and track and field. He?s looking at joining the Knights? swim and tennis teams as well. Is there any sport he hasn?t given a try yet?
?Water polo!? Seymour said. ?I would honestly love to try and play every sport in the world, like cricket.
?I hate sitting still,? he added. ?I can?t do it. I?ve got to be out doing something. I figured I?d just go all-out as a senior and play every sport I could.?
And so the list continues to grow.
This fall marks just the second year Seymour has ever played football, and the first time since his freshman year when he learned how to play the sport. When current Knights football coach Zach Bevilacqua, then an assistant, asked Seymour if he was interested in trying out at kicker three years ago, Seymour jumped at the chance. He sought out Knights kicker Peter Amico, his teammate on the soccer team, for advice on how to kick and punt a football. Seymour learned right away that it wasn?t easy.
?It?s really different than kicking a soccer ball,? Seymour said. ?Keep the nose up, keep the ball at a 45-degree angle, and just drop and connect with your foot and have power while you do it. Not easy.?
Once he got the hang of it, Seymour found punting enjoyable. But with the amount of time it took to learn the craft, he decided to forgo playing football as a sophomore and junior. When Bevilacqua was named the Knights? head coach this past summer, Seymour figured it was a good time to get back to the gridiron. Since he?s made his return, Seymour has changed his style of punting from ?rugby style,? where the player rolls out to his right and kicks on the run, to taking the snap and straight-punting the ball.
And while North Lincoln has struggled to an 0-5 mark, Seymour said that playing football again has been a positive experience. He?s connected on three extra points and is anxious to show off the leg strength that allowed him to make a 53-yard field goal in practice.
?I really enjoy playing football and I?m glad I went back to it,? Seymour said. ?It?s kind of like now I?ve got three families: the soccer team, the football team and my family at home.?
But Seymour said he?s not above being picked on by teammates from time to time.
?It?s all in fun,? Seymour said. ?Those guys know what I can do on a field, and they?ve got my back.?
So does Knights soccer coach Tim Harris, who entrusts a solid portion of his team?s offense to Seymour. Thus far, he?s delivered. Seymour ranks second on the Knights in goals scored. But sometimes, Seymour can get a little too hyped up; he?s gotten a pair of yellow cards this season.
But the field of play is his refuge, even though balancing everything going on in his life can sometimes be a grind.
?I?ve got to find time to do schoolwork and sleep, too,? Seymour said. ?I play three games a week usually ? two soccer, one football. So I?ll do homework on the bus or before a game, just whenever I get a chance to.?
School plays the biggest role in Seymour?s life. With such a sports-heavy schedule, Seymour said he doesn?t mind spending time in the classroom or doing homework, especially because he knows it will pay off once he leaves North ?Lincoln.
Seymour hasn?t decided where he?ll go to college, but he lists Western Carolina and Appalachian State as options.
Not surprisingly, Seymour also plans on playing college sports as a walk-on wherever he goes. Does he have any sports in mind yet?
?Not really,? Seymour said. ?Whatever sports they?ll let me play in college, I?ll play. No different than here.
?I?ll play any sport.?

Green Energy Light Bulbs | Best Green Energy Guide

Although the word a??naturala?? is among the most commonly found words in recent trends in home improvement, it does not always go hand-in-hand with cost effectiveness. As eco-friendly products become a more popular commodity and more available, prices of those products are decreasing, with savings not only limited to immediate project costs but also long term energy use.

Meanwhile, as the Go Green! trend increases, other types of trends are surfacing or regaining value, especially those that give tax breaks. These include energy efficient windows, doors, insulation, metal or asphalt roofs, and solar panels. Outcomes for consumers are even better when tax breaks and energy efficiency are combined.

With the economy's current gradual incline, consumers looking to update, change, and better their homes are finding that products with long-term solutions and quality are the investments that they are looking to make. Customization in many American homes starts with functionality and is combined with eye-pleasing creations. The use of older light fixtures in the house replaced with energy efficient light bulbs or the recycling of wood from an old shed or barn are money savers with a twist; they add a rustic look with a feel of freshness.

The do-it-yourself method is gaining in popularity in the economic crunch, but depending on the magnitude of the home improvement project, the competitive market and the complexity of newer home improvement eco-friendly ideas, it is important to look for a home remodeling company with plenty of experience and enthusiasm for your particular building project niche.

Putting a Fresh Coat on Home Improvement

Reducing toxins in the air with eco-friendly paint is a good first step in the Go Green home remodeling movement. While this paint still needs to be reapplied every couple of years, the green version avoids putting damaging toxins into the environment. The Freshaire Choice and BioSHIELD are companies that offer a variety of stains, paints and finishes that are truly environmentally friendly.

Interestingly enough, consumers can go in the opposite direction and avoid the harmful effects of paint altogether. One company has created home siding with a 15-year finish warranty, thus the need to repaint is drastically minimized. Along with the reduced need to paint, JamesHardie utilizes locally available resources whenever possible (and fewer of them) to manufacture their merchandise, reducing the cost of the transportation of materials and decreasing the emission of destructive gas toxins. Fiber-cement, as produced by JamesHardie, has been given the USGBC LEED? certification, which, according to usgbc.org, is the a??nationally accepted benchmark for the design, construction and operation of high performance green buildings.a?? With tax incentives, this innovative home siding is offered by companies across the country.

A New Window on Energy Efficiency

The next step in cost saving home improvement items are energy efficient windows and doors. The type of glass used in the latest generation of replacement windows, offered by a number of companies, works in multiple beneficial ways for the homeowner. Www.efficientwindows.org explains the benefit of energy efficient windows, the energy tax credit that can be obtained by using an Efficient Window Collaborative (EWC), and the environmental savings that can be made by the use of this product.

Home improvement companies have seen an increase in the construction of sunrooms, with a variety of replacement window treatments used to keep warm air out in the summer and cool air out in the winter. Andersen Windows has created practical, energy efficient windows using SmartSuna,? glass that helps to protect interior items such as furniture and carpets by letting in natural daylight and blocking 95 percent of UV rays. Doors created with this economical glass also reduce the destruction of the home's interior with an incentive for consumers to also get a tax break.

Making it Easier to Go Green

Trends in home remodeling are developing with the growing economy. With the increasing availability of Green building products, companies are looking for more innovative ways to conserve the environment in conjunction with lowering consumers' project costs. Interest from both businesses and homeowners is growing, and remodeling companies that want to grow with the times are now making sure they offer the eco-responsible products that the market is demanding.

Simple ideas, such as recycling older items to create new home fashions or replacing old light fixtures with energy efficient bulbs are in the forefront of Green ideas, due to the ease of implementation and the low costs involved. Larger projects, including siding and window replacement, may come with tax break incentives and can identify among Green movement credentials.

Consumers are also looking for builders who practice what they promote, recycling left over materials, practicing safe disposal of hazardous wastes, and finding ways to make their own facilities a showcase of green building practices.

International Bio Agriculture Company to Add Jobs in Hartland ...

A new international bio agriculture firm in Hartland ? Koppert USA ? is hiring and the news is the latest in positive business developments in the area.

Just last week Meijer held a job fair to hire 40 new workers and a GameStop and a Vietnamese cafe express have plans to enter vacant spaces in the Shops at Waldenwoods shopping center.

"We are almost full," said Hartland Township Assessor Jim Heaslip.

Officials have noted that about 90 percent of commercial space is currently occupied ? and there's plenty of land available for more development, such areas now anchored by Meijer and Walmart.

In addition, Heaslip said there were 36 new businesses in the township by the end of 2010, although some did replace several others that have left or gone out of business.

The news also is tempered by the overall slow economy and a string of closures in the area this year, including Hartland's Blockbuster store, St. Joseph Mercy's family practice and Washtenaw Community College's satellite campus at the Hartland Educational Support Service Center.

But GameStop is replacing Blockbuster's space while Koppert represents a transformation in the area economy, Heaslip said. It is housed in a 44,000 square foot building that formerly was LDM Technologies, an auto supply plant at 1502 Old U.S. 23 that closed in 2007 had been vacant since. Starting in late 2010, the company began transforming the plant into a space for multiple labs for biological crop protection and natural bumblebee pollination.

"To take an old industrial building and build labs inside is a real different use," he said.

The company, based in the Netherlands, started to move in several months ago from a Romulus location and held its grand opening Aug. 26 ? an innovative change for that building, Heaslip says.

The firm employs about 40 and is looking to hire in production, management, sales and administration, according to Daniel Frank, who handles the company's marketing. Those interested are asked to email: info@koppertonline.com.

?A new building means a new home for Koppert USA ? a place in which we can comfortably further our business, our employees and from which we can service our customers," said the company's general manager Rene Ruiter in an news release.

"To be able to invest in a new home is a great accomplishment and reflects our past and current success, nonetheless it is not a destination, it is a new beginning of an era in which we anticipate further growth and opportunities to advance biocontrol and pollination.?

Jana Warford, executive director of the Hartland Area Chamber of Commerce, says the new businesses and hiring is hopeful, although she does know that some existing businesses that continue to struggle.

"I am thrilled to see people come into Hartland," Warford said. "I can't but help feel that things are looking up. ? (Despite some services leaving), I still think Hartland has a lot of offer."

China raps US on Taiwan arms, warns of fallout

(AP) ? China on Thursday denounced a decision by the United States to upgrade Taiwan's F-16 fighter jets, summoning the U.S. ambassador and warning that military ties and overall relations will suffer.

Despite the heated rhetoric, the impact on overall ties was expected to be slight, partly because Washington deferred a decision on whether to sell Taiwan a more advanced version of the plane that would have stirred far greater anger from Beijing.

China reacts strongly to all U.S. military cooperation with the island, but previous threats to retaliate diplomatically or economically have come to nothing.

China is also preparing this autumn to send vice president and assumed future leader Xi Jinping to Washington for a major profile-building visit. A significant rise in tensions could poison the atmosphere for such a trip, tarnishing Xi's image as future leader of the world's most populous nation and second-largest economy.

The Chinese Foreign Ministry said in a statement on its website that Vice Minister Zhang Zhijun summoned U.S. Ambassador Gary Locke in Beijing to deliver the protest.

"The wrongdoing by the U.S. side will inevitably undermine bilateral relations as well as exchanges and cooperation in military and security areas," Zhang told Locke, according to the statement.

China regards the democratic island of 23 million people as part of its territory, and sees the arms sales as undermining China's efforts to woo back Taiwan. The two sides split amid civil war in 1949.

Beijing's anger comes even though the U.S. decided not to sell Taiwan new F-16 fighter jets, as Taiwan and some in Congress had pushed for. Taiwan had long wanted 66 new F-16 C/Ds, but the deal permits it a series of upgrades on its existing fleet of F-16 A/Bs.

In Taipei, Taiwan's Foreign Ministry hailed the Obama administration for "responding to our request proactively by taking concrete actions to approve" the $5.85 billion package to upgrade the island's F-16 fleet. In a statement late Wednesday night, the ministry said the package is "composed of many advanced systems."

"We will continue to work closely with the United States to strengthen our national security and maintain the peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait," it said.

Beijing temporarily suspended military exchanges with the U.S. last year after the Obama administration notified Congress it was making $6.4 billion in weapons available to Taiwan, including missiles, Black Hawk helicopters, information distribution systems and two Osprey Class Mine Hunting Ships.

Military exchanges are again considered the most likely target of China's wrath, although Beijing could also cancel some symbolic meetings. Even then, the impact would likely be slight ? China has long viewed defense contacts as a political bargaining chip and they have proceeded only sporadically over the past decade with frequent interruptions.

"At the end of the day, I don't think there'll be significant damage," said Gabe Collins, a Michigan-based expert on the Chinese military and co-founder of China Signpost, an online publication that follows China's armed forces.

Collins said the Foreign Ministry's strongly worded protest was largely a concession to the powerful military and nationalistic public sentiment fed by state propaganda portraying the U.S. as an interloper that uses support for Taiwan as a means of restraining China's rise.

"For the sake of legitimacy, the regime has to respond strongly. There will always be bluster and threats bandied about, but they also know that the U.S. is their most important foreign relationship," Collins said.

Taiwan's appeals for U.S. military assistance are driven largely by China's rapid military modernization, especially in its air fleet. Over recent years, the People's Liberation Army Air Force has added scores of advanced Russian Su-27 and domestically developed J-10 warplanes to its fleet, and recently began testing a prototype stealth fighter called the J-20. China is also sea testing its first aircraft carrier, a refurbished Soviet model bought from Ukraine.

Taiwan, meanwhile, has seen its air defense edge degraded as its fleet of F-16 A/Bs, French Mirage 2000-5 and domestically developed IDF fighters steadily ages.

The upgrade package will significantly boost capabilities but is not nearly as advanced as the electronics, avionics and fire systems aboard the C/D models that is believed to represent a level of sophistication that China has yet to acquire.
