I will be homeschooling my fifth grade son beginning next week. I'm very excited to be able to do this, and I have lots of ideas for lesson plans and activities. I have also enrolled my son in a few more extra-curricular activities than usual in order to round out his education and give him some social outlets so that he's not just stuck at home with me all day every day. My main concern at this point, though, is that we don't know any other families who currently homeschool their kids, and we would very much like to meet some. I would like to meet some other homeschooling parents so that I can ask questions about curriculum, lesson planning, and other issues that are new territory for me. I would also like for my son to meet other kids who are homeschooled because I really think it would help him make the transition from attending public school to being homeschooled. Right now, he feels like he's the only kid in the world who is homeschooled. I've tried explaining to him that he only feels that way because up until now, everyone he has known has attended large public or private schools, so that's his current frame of reference. I have reassured him that once he gets used to homeschooling and once he starts meeting other kids who are homeschooled, he will no longer feel like the only homeschooled kid in the world.
I have already contacted several local homeschooling support groups that I found online in order to ask about group events and activities, field trips, etc., but so far, I have heard back from only one of them. If anyone who currently homeschools could point me in the right direction for getting started with meeting some other homeschooling families, I would truly appreciate it! My son and I are looking forward to forming some new friendships!
