Authorities are investigating the cause of an Appomattox house fire Sunday that claimed the lives of two pets.
The fire at 435 Oakleigh Ave. took about 30 minutes to control, Appomattox Volunteer Fire Department Chief Timothy Garrett said. The house is likely a complete loss, he said, estimating damage at between $40,000 and $60,000.
Altogether, 22 volunteer firefighters responded to the scene.
Fire Marshall Lonny Hamlett and a Virginia State Police fire investigator are working together to determine the cause of the fire.
Garrett said no one was injured in the blaze, although two dogs were unable to get out of the house and perished.?
